Minecraft colour codes

Last updated

Minecraft has no official colour palette, but its sky, grass and stone colours are distinctive enough to be recognisable anywhere. Here are the HEX values behind them.

Minecraft sky colour

The sky is not one colour. It shifts with the time of day, and that range is the whole reason it reads as Minecraft rather than as generic blue:

You can copy the full set with its contrast data on the Minecraft Sky Mood palette page.

Why the sky looks flat

Minecraft's sky is almost flat colour with very little gradient — a deliberate consequence of the game's simple lighting model. If you are recreating it, resist the urge to add a smooth gradient. The flatness is what makes it recognisable.

Using Minecraft colours in a design

These are saturated colours designed to read at small sizes on a low-resolution texture atlas. That means they work brilliantly as accents and badly as page backgrounds — a full screen of #5D9C3C is exhausting. Use one or two at full strength and desaturate anything that has to cover a large area.

For dark interfaces — game UIs, stream overlays, fan sites — pair the sky tones with the stone greys rather than with the grass greens. The blue-grey combination is far easier to read against.
